what you see may not be what you get

just watched killing fields few days ago. (yea, bought the dvd in cambodia and burnt it into my laptop. hurr)

how can one human being be so cruel to a fellow human being?
it shows the kind of hatred they have in them.
what i cant understand is how can the hatred be so intense that such torturing and killing can come so easily to them.
what was in their mind?
was it just the sense of satisfaction they were seeking?
just cause a person is rich, they KILL him.
you dont need much of a reason for killing them.
you dont like him? KILL.
even children were taught to be brutal from young by the khmer rouge.
so as they grew older, they have been brain washed and killing seems like a child's play to them.

on the other hand, there were people who were left with no choice but to join the khmer rouge.
if not, they would be killed, their family would be killed.
although the killings have ceased, there are still many people who are still suffering.
little kids begging on the streets instead of being in school,
some orphans are left to fend for themselves,
victims of the land mines are not able to land themselves a proper job,
travelling miles just to see a doctor, even so, they may not have the money to pay.
living conditions are still not improved.

the children i met at the orphanage/school are the lucky ones.
the have a shelter, education, food and people to care for them.
they are saved.
the innocence in their eyes, being very appreciative to you even if you give them a small lollipop.
on the last day at the school, we had some extra sweets so we thought of giving it to the other students.
they were crowding at the door trying to grasp your attention for the sweet like you're giving away money.
from this, you can tell that their living conditions didnt allow them to eat sweets as and when they want unlike singaporeans, we just go to the nearest mama shop and buy whatever we want without having to think twice.
sweets to them, is a luxury item.
it's quite heart wrenching to see disappointed faces when you didnt have enough sweets to go around.

it's only when you experience these living conditions that it makes you cherish what you have.
